Ages and Geologic Histories of Martian Meteorites
We review the radiometric ages of the 16 currently known Martian meteorites, classified as 11 shergottites (8 basaltic and 3 lherzolitic), 3 nakhlites (clinopyroxenites), Chassigny (a dunite), and the orthopyroxenite ALH84001. The basaltic shergottites represent surface lava flows, the others magmas that solidified at depth. Shock effects correlate with these compositional types, and, in each c...
متن کاملMartian Lowland Basement Ages: Is Amazonis Really Younger?
Regional studies of Quasi-Circular Depressions (QCDs) in the martian lowlands show many areas with a common total (visible+buried) population crater retention age (CRA) of N(100) ~ 10+/-1. Ama-zonis appears to be much younger, but it is also possible that the basement is so thoroughly buried that no relic topography from deep impact basins can be seen in MOLA data. Crustal thickness data sugges...
متن کاملIgneous Petrogenesis of Yamato Nakhlites
Introduction: We have carried out detailed petrographical-mineralogical description of three Yamato nakhlites (Y000593, Y000749 and Y000802). These three are paired. We clarified chemical compositional differences between the Yamato nakhlites and other nakhlites, and subclassified the Yamato nakhlites as an intermediate type between NWA817 and others (Nakhla, Governador Valadares and Lafayette)...
متن کاملCalibration of the Eu Oxybarometer for Nakhlites
Introduction: Martian meteorites have various characteristics, which are direct clues to understanding the petrogenesis of Mars rocks. The variation in oxidation state among the Martian meteorites must have important implications for redox conditions of the Martian crust/mantle and overall differentiation on Mars. Wadhwa [1] and Herd et al. [2] reported that Martian basalts were formed under a ...
